You're free to pick any player or coach that is currently available in the real-life national teams in South Africa. Your chosen player's real performances out on the pitch directly affect their value in the game.
Between each game round you can sell players that you think have been under performing and buy in new players to replace them. At the end of the World Cup, the manager whose team performed the best, achieving the largest overall growth, is declared the winner - it's that simple!
